SFJAG is very excited to be hosting Kim St. Jean for 3 days of great metal jewelry classes.
Kim St. Jean is an award-winning instructor, author and jewelry designer. You can find Kim’s work in magazines, on craft television programs and in her books Mixed Metal Mania and Metal Magic. In 2012 the editors and readers of Bead & Button and BeadStyle magazines honored her as a “Top Ten Instructor”. If you want to get a preview of Kim’s teaching style search YouTube for one of her tutorials.
Kim and husband Norm spend much of the year traveling across the country teaching classes at bead shows, jewelry schools, guilds, clubs, studios and stores. In between her busy travel schedule, Kim teaches out of her studio in Charlotte, NC. They will be driving to Miami and will bring all the tools and torches we will need for four amazing classes. Norm will be transforming our room at the Elks Lodge into a fully functioning metals studio. How nice it will be to come to class and not have to bring loads of tools.
The best part is that all of Kim’s classes are open to students of all skill levels. So now is your chance to try your hand and metal work without having to make a big investment in tools and materials.
Early Member Discounts in effect until October 3, 2014. So sign up early to get your discount and before the classes are open to the general public. Kim has a big following and even at full price these classes are a bargain. Because our guild is dedicated to bringing affordable educational opportunities to jewelers in South Florida these classes are very reasonably priced compared to taking them at a bead show.
On Friday you will have a choice to two great classes, or, stay all day and take them both! In the morning (10:00 to 1:00) is a the Fold Formed Cuff with a cab. Kim is bringing hundreds (yes, hundreds) of cabs for us to choose from. Early Bird Member Class Fee: $45, Non-member: $65, class kit $35. Then in the afternoon (1:30 to 4:00) is the Ruffled Bangle Bracelet. Early Bird Member Class Fee: $45, Non-member: $65, class kit $45.
Saturday is the Spider Pendant. If you’ve ever wondered how to set that odd shaped stone, or fossil, then this is the class for you. You will learn to utilize cold connections, prong brazing, and wire wrapping to make this pendant with a unique stone setting. Additional skills covered include sawing negative space, multi-layered riveting, large wire collar forming, texture, and patina. Early Bird Member Class Fee: $90, Non-member: $120, class kit $35.
Sunday students will learn to create unique components using pewter casting techniques and a butane culinary torch. We will cast through things, onto things, and into molds pressed into casting sand. We call the techniques through it, onto it, and into it. Pewter provided is lead free and made in the USA. There is enough pewter in the kit to make 10+ castings. We will have hundreds of molds to choose from or bring your own object for impression. Turning the castings into wearable jewelry will be covered as well. As will all of Kim’s classes this class is open to all levels, and all tools & supplies will be provided. Early Bird Member Class Fee: $90, Non-member: $120, class kit $35.
